hello all im a newbie to the world of jeep so any and all help will be awsome. I just got a 1979 cj5 with the 258 six in it the odom has only 73.000. but it looks to be a very hard bunch of miles. its bone stock except 4 the 31/10/50 tires and I want to put it back to its original glory. I was a gift from a deceased relative so im inclined to rebuild it. this was the very first jeep I ever saw or rode in as a kid going hunting with my father and uncle who are both gone now. HELL i shot my first spike buck from resting my dads 30/06 on the spare tire. any ways Im in need of any pics and tips to complete this restoration I think I need one of every thing parts that is. thanks

Hi. this sounds like a great project and a heartfelt one at that. what a great opportunity. I wish I still had the 1969 CJ-5 I started out in.
for pictures of your model year you can start at the Jeep history page: http://www.jeep.com/en/history/
you can also do a google image search for your model year and come up with a lot of hits.
for parts check out Omix-Ada (http://www.omix-ada.com/). They have pretty much every part you'll need to do a ground-up rebuild. another great source is Collins Bros. Jeep (http://www.collinsbrosjeep.com/), whih also offers many NOS and replacement parts to build your CJ back to factory spec or lift and modify it to however you want it.
I would suggest as a first step you license and register the Jeep in your name and then make it run. start with the engine and you'll soon find out if the axles aren't turning or the transmission isn't working. if it has been siting for a long time you will want to at the very least change the fluids all around to make sure you aren't creating more damage. fluids to change: engine oil, radiator coolant flush, transmission fluid, axles - gear oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid.
Keep us posted on the rebuild!
