Jeep CEO Mike Manley let word slip at the Geneva Motor Show that his company is looking to build a subcompact-sized B-segment SUV by 2013.

Manley said that Chrysler's partnership with Fiat would be critical to building the new car, as Jeep is looking at using Fiat's 1.6-liter and 1.3-liter JDTm diesels, as well as the 1.4-liter Multiair gasoline mill.

The package would likely be based on the Fiat Grande Punto, and most models would be front-wheel drive. Since this is a Jeep product, at least the top-of-the-line trim level would get four-wheel drive.

Expect the subcompact Jeep to be aimed at the Mini Cooper and the Audi A1, with a premium options list in a supermini. Despite targeting the premium hatchback market, the Jeep will carry at least a passing resemblance to the Wrangler, and won't totally abandon its rugged off-road ethos.

Strange that they speculate it will be based on the Grande Punto.  I would think they would use the Panda Cross 4x4 as it's already FWD with rear assist via viscous coupler.  Not to mention shares the chassis with the 500 so if they move mfg to the US they can make them on the same assembly line.

I agree. The Panda Cross 4x4 looks like the better base.

funny though as the Patriot and Compass already seem so sub-compact. how much smaller can they get?

by the way, I attended a Jeep intro in Wyoming earlier this year and drove both the Compass and Patriot on some stuff that most of these vehicle buyers would never attempt. mud and snow with body-dragging drop offs. lots of fun when you're in a "rental". both vehicles  took everything without issue. i even left both in 2WD and throttled through stuff just to see if it would make it. i was thoroughly impressed. if Jeep offers a "sub-compact" that can handle stuff like this i will be eager to give it a go. i have been impressed with the Jeep FWD 4x4s so far. they aren't mega rock crawlers at all but it is fun to see how far you can push them.

I think the cab is about the same but there will be less overhang from the engine and a smaller trunk.  Although US Spec. bumpers will have to be added.

I would see someone swapping the axles and installing a proper transfer case for the following SEMA.  If they're cheap enough, they could be the next Sami.

Fiat Panda

Wheelbase 2,305 mm (90.7 in) (4x4)
Length 3538 mm (139.3 in)
Width 1578 mm (62.1 in)
Height 1578 mm (62.1 in)

Jeep Compass

Wheelbase 103.7 in (2,634 mm)
Length 173.4 in (4,404 mm)
Width 69.3 in (1,760 mm)
Height 65.2 in (1,656 mm)

Jeep Patriot

Wheelbase 103.7 in (2,634 mm)
Length 173.6 in (4,409 mm)
Width 69.1 in (1,755 mm)
Height 65.7 in (1669 mm)
