Hello!
I'm looking at different full size AWD minivans (full size mini if that makes sense).
I have a minivan currently that I will be upgrading. My budget is $8k or less. The minivan is used to tow a small boat and a small trailer. It is also used for hauling 4'x8' sheets of plywood or 8' studs. Of the four cars we have, the minivan has the most ground clearance so we typically drive it if the snow is deep. Because we often drive in moderately deep snow, I'd like an AWD system that had a viscous middle differential rather than an open middle differential.
Which (if any) of the following AWD vans use viscous middle differentials (or equivalent) rather than open differentials?
Option 1: Chrysler Town & Country Dodge Grand Caravan Pro - easy to get with 3.8L Con - older 3.8L don't have much power
Option 2: Chevrolet Astro GMC Safari Pro - high towing capacity 4.3L, super cheap Con - ugly & truck ride
Option 3: Buick Terraza Chevrolet Uplander Pontiac Montana SV6 Saturn Relay Pro - 3.5L ok engine Con - didn't start making them until 2005
Option 4: Chevrolet Venture Oldsmobile Silhouette Pontiac Montana Pro - Cheap Con - 3.4L is weak
Option 5: Toyota Sienna Pro - best in class Con - good luck finding one under $8k

If you're planning on towing, I'd go with the Astro/Safari. They're pretty beefy, and share a lot of parts with the half-ton trucks. I've also seen guys swap V8s in them pretty easily, if you're so inclined.

I agree with Ed. The Astro is strong and very inexpensive. The ride isn't THAT bad.
