does anyone have any info on how big a tire has to be to float a given weight I have a set of 49x21x16.5 tires I'm trying to figure out if they will float my samurai there has to be a math formula or something that says how much water they displace and how much you have to displace to float a given weight say 2000lbs. I'd like to stay above the axle line any info would be great.

Don't forget to enter center-of-gravity into the equation. I once watched a guy in a FJ40 Land Cruiser with giant tires drive into a lake. The vehicle floated, then turned over. The next thing we saw was the guy standing on his crossmember with four tires sticking out of the water around him.

Good point, Phil. It's important to take all those different factors into consideration. I guess in theory, the most stable way to do it would be to have the wheels/tires far outboard of the main body, and the main body close to the centerline of the wheels. Would be kind of weird-looking, but would be the most stable with big tires.
