Hi Everybody, This is my first post. I am going to take the plunge and buy a suv. My first.
So far my choices are a 99 4runner 4wd 3.0L evz-e v6 with a 5sp manual trans 140,000 miles and asking 4500 great condition
99 ford explorer 4wd 4.0 v6 cologne engine and 5-speed 5R55E automatic trans 88,000 miles and same price very good shape
What do you guys think. I really want a toyota but is it worth it to have the newer ford explorer.
thanks Jeff

Old thread--new reply.
Do you mean a '91 4Runner or a '99 4Runner? Since you mentioned the 3.0 V-6 and the 5-speed, I'll assume you're talking about a '91.
The '91 4Runner is well-supported by the aftermarket and has a chassis worth swapping a better engine into. The 3.0 V-6 isn't very powerful, isn't very reliable, and doesn't return very good fuel economy. That's 0-for-3 retty bad.
If you're looking for a daily driver, I'd go for the Explorer. The 4.0 SOHC V-6 has decent power and gets OK gas mileage. I believe a Dixon Bros. long-travel front suspension kit will fit (assuming it's the same front end as the A-arm 4x4 Ranger)--and will turn that Exporer into something fun whether you like going fast or slow.
In short:
Dedicated trail rig--4Runner
Daily driver that goes in the dirt--Explorer
Since it's been a while since you made your post, I imagine you've purchased something by now. Let us know what you got.
