Smokey Mountain Road is 90 miles of dirt road from Big Water, UT to Escalante, UT. Trail surface is graded dirt, slickrock, and sand. Difficulty rating is "easy", and it will take about six hours to complete the 90 miles. Scenery is typical desert and slickrock of southern UT, and warrants a day spent exploring the area. The start of the trail can be accessed easily from Big Water. Big Water is a small enough town that you can see one end of town from the other end. You will turn north off of Highway 89 and take the main street into town, then turn east on to the main access road to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. There is only one road heading east out of Big Water between Highway 89 to the south, and a rock bluff to the north, and this is it. You can't miss it. Several miles into the trip you will come to a fork in the road. One fork is to Smokey Mountain Hollow Road, and the other is to Smokey Mountain Ridge Road. Both forks rejoin to Smokey Mountain Road several miles later, so just choose the route you think will be most interesting. We went the Smokey Mountain Hollow route on our trip this time, and plan on going the Smokey Mountain Ridge route the next time we are in the area.
Here are some photos from our recent trip.

Wow! That's a gorgeous route.
Is it open and passable year-round?
