Older Jeep disc brake conversion

I have a 53 M38A1 and I want to change the brakes. Do I do the conversion or do I change the axels? If I change the axels will I not change the axel gears and affect my horse power of the 4 cyl? It has the original axels on it and the original engine. Also can I put on a newer master cylinder?
