2wD to 4WD

My son and his friends want to do a project. I've got a 98 Silverado 2WD extend cab. How difficult would it be to convert to 4WD? What would be needed? Front and Rear axles, Tranny, and Transfer Case? Will the frame/body be able to make the swap or are they specific to 2WD?
I've done up a real nice 64 impala, so I'm not afraid to do mechanicals. Never done any 4WD stuff before. Just wondering if this would be a bolt up job that the boys could do in the driveway or if it would require some fab work.
