I have a '96 Grand Cherokee that my buddy swears is haunted. It is actually just an electrical short, but it is really getting on my nerves. When it is below 35 degrees the interior lights flash on & off and the doors keep trying to relock. It especially does it going around curves to the right. I believe that it might be in the locking mechanism in the hatch. Does anyone know if the light switch is located inside the latch? I have several reasons for thinking that it is the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Well not sure quite why Jeep people do not like to talk about electical shorts, but I will try to shead some light on it, so to speak. I have 4 jeeps cj, yj, xj and zj. all off them have had some kinda of electical problem, but nothing serious, just enoying, what I have found is that a good off road trip for a few hrs, the problem goes away. but another one will show up. The power locks on my cherokees, are the worse problems, I have always felt that the worse accesorys on any 4x4 is power locks, they just cannot take the off roading, my yj cuts out all its lights when I am on high beam, oh well sometimes it is fun driving on a trail with no lights, for a few mins, my cherokee and grand cherokee is of course the power locks fail. When I trouble shoot these problems, I find it in the switches, light switch, power lock switch and the most have been it the steering colum, ie, turn signel arm switch. will just a few hints, hope they help. but remember all jeeps are haunted. jeepaz

my '99 Grand also suffers from electrical short issues that seem to be difficult to track down. they can be found but it takes time that i have not yet invested. biggest issue is that i keep blowing fuses for the interior lights and dash accessories. for a while i felt that the cab seemed darker than usual at night and i finally realized that half of my dash lights in the center stack were out. replaced a blown fuse but soon found that the horn was not working. then one day i tried to unlock the doors with the remote and the alarm went panic mode. i finally had to pull the positive battery lead until it reset.
that said, yes Jeeps, especially those used for frequent trail trips, seem to be susceptible to electrical issues.
some of the issues you mentioned, however, such as the going around curves and cold weather short outs, could be open wires that maybe brush the metal body upon vehicle lean, or maybe even moisture build-up during cold weather. a close inspection of the door locks wiring harness will possibly reveal a culprit.

check out Rough Country. they have a 4-inch kit to fit 31s for $600. includes shocks, new control arms, coil springs, and hardware. i have used the RC JK kit and it is great. getting ready to install the RC X-series 4-inch kit on my WJ. will have a review of it in the mag and also on the web.
