that's a pretty wide open question. CJ and Wrangler are two different beasts and will be built somewhat differently. On top of that, which CJ? early narrow track CJs will also receive different parts than later models.

here's a short list that applies to both:

-install a roll cage. many companies now offer bolt-in or bolt-in/weld-in roll cage kits for a variety of Jeep models.

-address the steering box mounting. many aftermarket companies have  heavy-duty steering box mounts or braces that are designed to strengthen this notoriously weak area on the frame.

-freshen suspension, tires, and wheels. many off the shelf bolt on suspension kits are available for these vehicles. get one that includes new shocks and a steering stabilizer as well as steering correction items to compensate for the lift.

-address engine with new plug wires, coil, plugs, air cleaner. make it run as well as it can.

-install lower gears in the transfer case

-install a hand throttle on the trans shifter stick on manual transmission rigs.

-install body armor

-install lower axle gears

-install a locker in the rear axle or front axle

get a wrangler, cj frames are notorious for rust. now as far as wranglers go, you can get a yj or a tj. yj's use leaf springs and tj's use coils. i have both the yj and tj, the tj is the easier one of the two to work on
I work to support my Jeep

Stretch the wheelbase!

100 inches is a good all-around wheelbase. The Phoenix had a 102-inch wheelbase and it climbed well, descended without drama, and was easy to maneuver on the trail.

Gen-Right and other companies make products to ease your Jeep stretch along.

4wdtech Has the right idea ... Those are definitely the musts on the Wrangler.
