The "environmentalists" are coming! And they have deep pockets filled to overflowing with money.
Ever hear that before?  Think about this a moment:
Back in 1979, as the President of the Montana 4X4 Association, I made several attempts to "rally the troops" to support either by sending money and/or their letters to those making the effort to work directly to keep our trails and federal lands open to the wheeling public.  They were not responsive.
Now western Montana is basically closed to wheeling, and not only that, the so called "environmentalists" have even been able to effectively shut down all forms of what used to be a major industry in Montana-- Logging.  From what I saw this last fall while on vacation in western Montana, there is only one full-sized working mill left in the state.  Areas where forest fires have burned the last few years are made off limits to any sane forest management practices as these fine folks take the Forest Service to court while would be salvageable timber rots on the stump.  They can simply tie things up in court and get "their way" by default.
Don't think this only happens in Montana.  Your backyard is no doubt in the sights of these misguided individuals.
What they couldn't include in all the Wilderness Study Areas, "Roadless Areas", are now being looked at for "Conservation Areas" and National Preserves of one name or the other.
It's past time for the wheeling, ATVing, Motorcycling, Mountain Biking, people and the industries that they support to come together like our opponents have.  We MUST get behind the people who will meet them on their terms-- in courts and in meetings with Congress and the Land Management agencies.  Our side needs to make at least as much   noise and spend the resources to keep our public lands available to our chosen sports.
Support your local clubs, state associations, national organizations, manufacturer coalitions, and any other entity that will fight the fight.
We all lose when we just sit back waiting for the other guy.  He may be a lazy bum who can't or won't write a letter or check to support the cause.

i know what you're saying onejsmith. i've been a life member of the nra for awhile now, and the war's the same over there, only compounded by the fact that the hand wringers don't want you toting firearms, much less accessing public land. seems to me that if i'm paying tax dollars for these lands, i have just as much right to access them as the "elitists" do. i'm constantly firing off e-mails and checking a candidates background before i even vote for them. it feels like you're constantly running uphill, which makes the victories all that much sweeter. the best way to correct this, is to look at the candidates background and who supports them. i tend to vote conservative, the liberal side just doesn't get it.
