What do you guys think of the new Wrangler Unlimited being a 4-door? Do you think this compromises it, or do you think it was a smart move on Jeep's part to offer a 4-door?

I think it was a smart move on Jeep's part. Just 'cause a guy wants to go 'wheelin' doesn't mean he wants to give up the day-to-day practicality of a more conventional SUV. This offers the best of both worlds. For the really hard-core guys, they still offer the 2-door, but the 4-door is a good option for people that want something a little more practical for everyday driving.

Great move for DC/Jeep. Think about it. How many people buy a Jeep as a DD and never let the thing see dirt. At least around here (Western PA) I bet it's better than 95% of Wranglers are never wheeled. So now DC offers a Jeep for those Mall Crawling types. The ones that want a "Jeep" but don't want to give up the room they had in their Trail Blazer.
As far as wheel-ability. I am sure they are more than capable, but I am sure their break over angle is much worse than the CJ, YJ, TJ's.

I don't know about you guys, but I've seen a lot more 4-doors on the road than 2 doors so far. Seems like they made the right move with this one.

i've seen one at my wifes work, looks ok....roomy. don't like the plastic bumper. if you pack lots of stuff, this is probably the way to go. i'll probably never own one, like my '95 YJ too much to trade it in.

The biggest problem I have with any of the Wranglers, 2-door or 4-door, is that freakin' boat anchor of an engine. The 3.8 minivan V-6 is pretty helpless. At least give us the 4.0 24v out of the Nitro or something! I still think the 3.0 CRD turbodiesel from the Grand Cherokee would be the best engine. What do you guys think? Hemi, 4.7 or turbodiesel?

wanted to share my .02 My husband bought me a 4 door JK in October. I loved it from the first time I drove it. I still love it. It drives nice and gets awesome gas mileage, compared to my moms 03 TJ sport.
It is roomy. I can fit both my children in toddler carseat and infant carrier in the backseat and still have room to strech out and sleep, sit, relax (if we are driving somewhere and I or the hubbo sit in the back with the kids)
The hard top is nice with the front cmoing off in two pieces and the back as one. The only thing that sucks about it .. you can't take your top off out in town or wheeling (unless you do it before. There is no room in the back for em' they make EXPENSIVE carriers, why waste the money though?
Heaters are awesome, like usual though huh? The storage space in the back is big, not as big as a truck bed or suburban, but its definetly good sized. I have a "big wheels" jeep in the back ... on its side and room left over like a foot ..
THE DOWNFALLS:
They come with nice sound system and speakers. Wish they weren't as nice though, cause then I could really take it wheeling. It would suck to have em short out (But hey .. it should be covered under warranty). Full doors suck, with the automatic locks and windows.
...I wihs I had manual and half doors ... hard to find around here .... roof racks suck to mount (the top is fiberglass!) .... they come with 3.21s or 3.73s factory unless you go with rubicon which comes with 4.10s and an electronic swaybar disconnect. I want!!! .... If you put a lift bigger than 4" you need to regear .. it gets expensive quick, I have to regear havea 08 4dr JK unl. X ... 4.5" Long Arm Kit by Rubicon Express and 35" mickey thompsons and Cragar 17's ... the esp comes on in the most opportune time .. along with the abs ... you go from 22 to 10 in mileage after 35's ... you get stuck everywhere if you go over a stump .. unless you have a lift. It can make it down all the easy trails with little stumps or rocks .. anything else no no no! ... water gets sucked into air filter super easy .... luckily if you get out quick enough, it may not get sucked into engine.
... tahts about it for now on my opinion ... all in all I love my JK. I can't get enough driving, especially now after my lift .. haha ... oh yeah, you still get the jeep wave, unless they aren't a "true Jeeper"

Everyone thought it would be pretty hard to top the TJ. I felt that way too. I mean, a Wrangler with coils all around? What could be better! Right? I think considering all the safety regulations, etc, Jeep did a pretty good job with the JK, but again (pardon me for beating a dead horse) that 3.8 engine just ain't doin' it. Especially, like jkgirl said, once you lift it or put big tires on it, the mileage goes down the toilet. At least with a bigger engine, lifts or bigger tires wouldn't affect it as much.

I'm ready to buy a new Ruby, but with all the talk about sluggish engines, I'm hestitant (sluggish) to make the buy. Is there any talk about a more robust power plant as an option to the current engine? They let us opt for everything else - why not the engine as well?

i don't know if you can. but if so, go with the 4.0 high output or the 4.2.
