There is an SUV sold around the world by the name of the Daihatsu Terios. Small does not begin to describe it. From the looks of it on the outside, one would assume it was a front wheel drive cute-ute pretender. But it actually has some hardcore off road technology in that it comes standard with full-time four wheel drive, a low-range transfer case and a differential lock. I can't really picture mud plugging in something so small, but I think it is cool it exists. To read more, follow this link.

I rented one in Costa Rica for two weeks.  Took it through rivers, mud, two tracks etc.  It didn't hesitate once (except on the highway, I would not drive this rig over 65 mph).  One thing though there is no low range.  First gear is super deep though to make up for it.  Ground clearance is money.  Fabric is terrible and I reccomend you wear long sleaves and pants as any ride over one hour results in some serious rug burn to your elbow and thighs.  This thing is designed well from a packaging standpoint though.  It swallows up four people and their camping gear more easily then my 2005 LJ.  Gas mileage is money too, but I was surprised that this thing did not use hamster pellets instead of 87 octane.  Too bad this thing isnt in the states (probably can't pass safety regs) because I would not hesitate to get one as my daily driver (with upgraded fabric though).

It's also known as the Toyota Rush in some markets since Toyota owns Daihatsu.
