My first truck, my first real vehicle honestly, was a beautiful 1991 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4wd. Some of my best off-road memories, some of my best memories are associated with that truck. Often times I wish I could find one to buy again but most 4Runners of that vintage I see seem to be beaten up pretty bad, to put it mildly. Well, imagine my surprise when I found this on the Web. Chinese auto manufacturer Great Wall Motor Company has an SUV called the "Safe" that is an early nineties 4runner with a somewhat gaudy new grill. I wonder if Toyota knows they are making it? The Chinese are some of the worst rip-off artists there are. Toyota probably knows, but they're so far past from making that model, they've probably given up on taking any action, never mind the Chinese government will do little or nothing to enforce intellectual property claims. I'm still taking a "wait & see" attitude with Chinese vehicles. I don't know how red-hot the quality is going to be right out of the gate. Down the road, I'm sure they'll get their act together, like the Koreans did, but until then, I'm just going to sit by the sidelines and see how it goes.
