What time were you there at? I left work as soon as I could, all decked out in my white shirt, slacks, leather-bottom dress shoes and everything, and headed up in to the mountains. I arrived at the trailhead around 3 local time, and was up to the location by 3:30. I dug through trees and bushes for two and a half hours with no luck. I swear I was the first person there. There were no other footprints on the trail before I headed up, and the only other people I encountered the entire time I was up there were a forest service guy and his buddy, and they weren't looking for the Geo Stash. So, did I completely miss the bearings or what???

Are you sure you were in the right spot??

OK Kevin, is it official? Has OCTOBER really been found? Did you already receive a phone call?

Kevin has to make it official of course, but we were the family that RKANDMP met coming back down the trail.  We were very thrilled to find the marker, which was pretty well hidden at a fantastic overlook of Cache Valley.  Fortunately, my main help - our 2 year old girl - was there to help us find it.     We didn't see any bears or cougars this time out, but we did see a deer and some cows.  It was a great adventure!

What time were you there at? Were you on the coldwater lake trail? I am almost 100% positive that I was the first person on the trail. When I left, there was just a forest service worker there in a white pickup truck. I swear I had the coordinates accurate, but I wasn't overlooking Cache Valley. I was a bit northwest of the little pond, about .5 miles up the trail. I dug through a clump of trees for almost three hours with no luck. Where did you find it at?

It sounds like if you were there at 3:30 local that you were the first person there.  I probably would have been there around the same time had I been home to see the coordinates when they were first posted.  I was with my daughter watching Underdog.  I got home and saw the coordinate posting at around 6:15 pm Mountain Time and immediately hopped in the Jeep.  By the time we got there and I ran into the winning family coming back off the trail.

I guess it must have been pretty well hidden if you spent that much time up there and didn't find it.  They said it was hidden in some brush or something under a log, I think...and that was a little bit down the side of the hill.

You were definitely there way before us.  Rush hour(s) traffic was so bad on I15, I thought we'd never get there.

We also saw a white forest service truck heading out when we were driving in.  We found the marker just north of Coldwater Lake.  There is a place with an open view straight down *** Canyon and out into the valley.  There was a clump of brush/trees, and it was kind of in the middle of it, partially under a log.  It was tough to see.

Well that was quick, I just picked up a message (8:00PM last night) from Lee Wilson that he found the October marker. I haven't spoken with him yet but as soon as I do and he gets me a photo I'll make the find official.

Congratulations Lee, I left my home number on your voice mail, please call…

Ok, now that it has been found can you please tell me the page number the xx.xxxW is on? I have found the xxx. part but have been thru the mag like 40times reading everything and have missed the second half.  I have found and mapped all the other Goes from the past 2 years.  I even looked for the post the one month it was not published in the magazine and you listed it on the web site.  If you want to post it directly to me I can post my email.

Thanks in advance

Greg

Which Datum are you using for the Geo-Stash? NAD27CONUS, WGS84, or something entirely different?

PVjeeper I am using normal GPS coordinates, degree-minute decimal. Please just give me the page in the mag that they hide the minutes portion. I have found the degree portion.

The question is not to find out how to display the coordinates. That part is simple. However, there are several different sets of datum that you can use with your GPS to find a location. Unfortunately, with the different datum comes different readings. You could set your GPS to use the NAD 27 Conus, place a marker, and then change it to WGS 84 and your coordinates would change about 300 feet. So it would be important to know which datum set is being used by the magazine so that we can get a better idea of where to look in the future.

I'd assume and hope they were using the WGS84 datum, but yeah it would be nice to know for certain. Most people don't know what datum is and WGS84 is the default setting in most GPS in this county so far as I am aware.

Greg, it's on page 21. I'll listen for the sound of your palm smacking your forehead as it echoes across the country... It took me three times before I found it too, although it was the first time I was really patient and methodical in my search.

Kevin,
I have been following the Geo-Stash from the beginning, and I may have missed it, but I don't ever recall, seeing in print which Datum you are using to plant the marker?
