JUST GOT BACK FROM LOOKING FOR THE GEOSTASH AT THIS COORDINATES 32 DEG. 45.020N AND 92 DEG. 16.590W AND THERE WAS NO PLATE. AFTER SEARCHING FOR 2 HOURS I DECIDED TO CALL IT QUITS AND AFTER 12 HOURS I WAS VERY DISAPOINTED TO SEE IT WAS HIDDEN IN SUCH A PUBLIC AREA. IT WAS LOCATED OF FM 2 IN LOUSIANA IN A NAUTRAL SPRING LOCATION. WHILE I WAS SEARCHING I COUNTED AT LEAST 4 DIFFRENT INDIVIDUALS GETTING WATER FROM THE NAUTRAL SPRING.

NO PROBLEM!  But I have already been over there and the plate is not there. I searched for over two hours and I could not find it.  I have a very good gps and it said I was within 3 feet and there is a tree there that looks like every one around there has carved there name on but no metal plate.  If anyone else goes over there and does not find it I feel I should get the prize because I was the first to go over there.

I realize you can't just put the west coordinates on a page and say "here they are".  But this is getting ridiculous.  The degrees in my July issue were so close to the binding that I couldn't find them until I almost pulled my magazine apart to see them.

Since you have to buy or subscribe to the magazine to get the west coordinate, why not put them in more plane site.  Have them stand out a bit more.  Print them in a contrasting color.  But don't hide them so that you have to tear the magazine apart to find them.

You have to look through the whole magazine to get them no matter what.  Why make it so impossible.  It never used to be this hard to find them.

When I get my copy in the mail the first thing I do is go page-by-page looking for the west coordinates.  Once I've found them I then relax and read the magazine.  You've made me interested in articles I wouldn't have normally read and that's great.

It's supposed to be fun, not aggravating, to read a magazine like yours.

Thanks for listening,

Hey all!  I'm VERY new to this as I just got my first issue of the mag!  LOVE the GEOSTASH idea as it goes along w/my other love of geocaching!    I'm a US Marine currently serving in Iraq but coming home the end of next month and looking forward to being able to get out and find the plates myself.  My question is...I've only had a little time to go through the coordinates and it seems like ALL the stashes that I've seen so far have been WEST of the Mississippi River?  Being stationed  in SC that is going to make it a lot harder for me to get involved!  Are the stashes nationwide?

Welcome, Gunny. We're glad you like the Geostash contest. We try to spread the markers out across the continental U.S. as much as possible. Being that our offices are located in Southern California we do hide more than a few per year out here, but we also have hidden them as far east as New Jersey and the current (July) contest is located in the south east. The Geostash IV contest starts with the October 2008 issue and the marker will certainly make its way EAST of the Mississippi River through the course of the year.

Thanks for reading the mag. Be safe.

If this is where I think it is...could you have possibly made it any farther within my own damn state?  Sheesh.  That's a 14-hour drive for me...each way.  Factor in my dreams of exceeding 65mph (except downhill), and it's 15-16 hours.

Hi. No stupid questions, just stupid answers. hopefully this won't be a stupid one though.

Anyhow, Geostash is a monthly contest in the magazine. basically, we hide a marker somewhere in the U.S. then readers look for hidden coordinates in the magazine that pinpoint the markers location. For the current contest we hide one set of GPS coordinates in two parts in the magazine and the other half of the coordinate is posted on the 4WD&SU web site each month.

I listed the basic rules for participating in the contest below. Hope you find the time to participate.

How to GeoStash:
1. Find the west (longitude) coordinate in the magazine. The west coordinate is split into two parts and each is hidden separately, so look for XX° in one section of the magazine and XX.XXXW in another section of the magazine. The two parts of the coordinates may be hidden in the text of an article or ghost-imaged on a photograph. For example, if the coordinate were 106° 52.979W, you would look for the 106° in one section and the 52.979W in another.

2. Go to 4WD&SU’s website (www.4wdandsportutility.com) on the 15th of each month to find the north (latitude) coordinate. It will be posted in the forum under the “GeoStash Latest Updates” link on the main page. The north and west coordinates pinpoint a location somewhere in the continental U.S. A stainless steel plate (“marker”) laser-cut with the magazine’s title and our phone number can be found at this location.

3. Use the north and west coordinates to find and redeem the marker for a very cool prize. The marker is about the size of a vehicle’s license plate and it may be placed behind trees, between rocks, or under something, but it will not be completely buried or completely obscured from view. Finding the marker will likely require use of four-wheel drive and involve some hiking. Please check our website’s GeoStash page to see if the marker has been found for any given month before you go out searching. Also, please keep in mind that the marker may have been found while you are en route to the coordinate’s location. Once we have been notified, we will post where the marker has been found.

Is it the 15th yet. This is the first time that I have been able to be involved in this.

Too far for me... But I hope they get the coordinates posted early in the day so that folks can have a good Father's Day chasing after the marker.

Good luck!!!
